Afghan government signed the peace agreement with the leader of Hezb-i Islami party Gulbuddin Hekmatyar on Thursday Sep 29, 2016.
The peace agreement signed at a ceremony between President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani and head of Hezb-i Islami party’s delegation Karim Amin in Kabul’s presidential palace.
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar the leader of Hezb-i Islami party joined the ceremony live through video link said:”We hope the day has come that foreign countries will not influence our country’s affairs and that peace comes. Most important things for Afghans are ending of war and bringing peace to the country”.
Hekmatyar called on other groups of Taliban that join the peace process and said we can reach to our political goals through peace not war.
Hezb-i Islami party’s leader said foreign troops should leave Afghanistan soon. He added:”We always should do our work in any situation according to Islamic law. We started negotiations with government after almost 90 percent of foreign troops left the country”.
Hekmatyar said Mullah Rasoul one of the commanders of Taliban group supported his party to joined peace process and Mullah Rasoul would like to start peace talk with Afghan government delegation.
Hekmatyar added:” This situation is not any more acceptable. Experience shows that only we can reach the long-awaited peace from Afghan-owned process. The government should be for the service of Afghans and foreigners will not be here for long.”
Hezb-i Islami party’s leader said at the end of his speech that we should build Afghanistan and Afghan nation works together to end today’s crisis in the country.
Ghani: It’s very clear who wants war
Ashraf Ghani the president of Afghanistan said on today’s ceremony “today is a historic day for Afghanistan.”
Ghani added:”Our job is this to end the war and rescue the country from foreign countries we need to stand on our own feet. Peace has its own price and is not achieved easily”.
Afghan president strongly said:”It’s very clear now, to the people and the world, who wants war and who wants peace. We don’t want this war. This war is imposed on us and our security forces will defend the country. We believe in an Afghan-owned peace and we don’t want peace from others.”
Ghani called to Taliban said: “I thank those who are here today and also those who worked on this process. Now is the time for Taliban that to think about whether they want to continue the war or come for peace.”
On the other hand, Abdullah Abdullah the chief executive of National Unity Government of Afghanistan said:”We assure the nation that all people’s rights have been kept in this agreement. Others should also listen to the peace call of the nation and come to the peace process.”
Global reaction about signed peace agreement
The United Nations assistance mission in Afghanistan released a statement to supported Afghan government signed the peace agreement with Hezb-i Islami’s prty and said:” it was encouraged by the signing of the peace agreement.”
Alongside the UN, the European Union and US embassy in Kabul have supported the peace agreement between Afghan government and Hezb-i Islami’s party and calling the move a sign of strong hope for suffering Afghans.
Who is Gulbuddin Hekmatyar?
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is one of the most famous politicians and Jahadi leaders in Afghanistan. He is former prime minister of Afghanistan and the founder and current leader of Hezb- i- Islami. He was born on Jun 26, 1947 in Amam sahib district of Kundoz province of Afghanistan.
Hekmatyar joined to Burhanuddin Rabbani the former president and former leader of Hezb-i- Jamiat Islami party in 1971. He separated from Rabbani’s party in 1975 and he has founded Hezb-i- Islami. His party is a political and military party in Afghanistan.
According Wikipedia reports:”After escaping from prison in Afghanistan in 1973, he moved to Pakistan. When the Soviet war in Afghanistan began in 1979, the CIA began funding his rapidly growing Hezb-e Islami mujahideen organization through the ISI. Following the ouster of Afghan President Mohammad Najibullah in 1992, Hekmatyar and other warlords began a civil war in Afghanistan, which led to the deaths of around 50,000 civilians in Kabul alone. In the meantime, Hekmatyar was promoted to becoming Prime Minister of Afghanistan from 1993 to 1994 and again briefly in 1996. This was followed by the Taliban takeover of Kabul and Hekmatyar’s escape to Iran’s capital Tehran for safety.”
Meanwhile Sima Samar the head of Afghan independent human rights commission welcomed the peace agreement and strongly said Gulbuddin Hekmatyar the leader of Hezb-e Islami must apologize to the Afghans, but Habiburrahman Hekmatyar the son of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said in response that Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and his party’s members have done nothing wrong, so Hezb-i Islami does not have to apologize to the Afghan people.
It is the first peace treaty the Afghan government has completed since the war with the Taliban began in 2001.
